Tabish Hashmi Calls for Privatization to Improve Karachi Management

Renowned Pakistani host and comedian Tabish Hashmi reacted strongly to the recent Gul Plaza incident in Karachi. He suggested that the government should consider privatizing Karachi, similar to the approach used with PIA.

According to Hashmi, privatization would allow the city’s diverse communities – including Pashtuns, Baloch, Sindhis, Muhajirs, and Punjabis – to take ownership and manage the city more effectively.

Speaking on a private TV program, Tabish Hashmi recalled his childhood in Karachi. He said he attended school and Karachi University, worked various jobs, and frequently visited Gul Plaza after becoming a father. Hashmi noted that many Karachi households have purchased items from Gul Plaza over the years.

Hashmi criticized the authorities’ response to the tragedy. While people suggested he make videos about the incident, he said the government should already be aware of these issues. He questioned whose responsibility it is to address structural problems in buildings, emphasizing that local governments in cities worldwide manage such oversight.

Referring to the Sindh Chief Minister’s press conference, Hashmi said actions speak louder than words. He highlighted that Karachi has faced numerous disasters, and ongoing negligence continues to put lives at risk. He also criticized officials for not taking personal accountability, including failing to pay victim compensation from their own pockets.

Commenting on the Karachi Mayor, Hashmi said the mayor often justifies mistakes instead of accepting full responsibility. He compared this to other countries, where repeated failures often lead to resignations – a practice largely absent in Pakistan.

Hashmi also questioned the role of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He asked whether the party truly trusts its mandate despite holding 15 National Assembly and around 75 provincial seats from Karachi. He suggested that MQM should confidently step forward to represent the city.

In conclusion, Tabish Hashmi reiterated his proposal to privatize Karachi. He expressed confidence that if all communities – Pashtuns, Baloch, Sindhis, Muhajirs, and Punjabis – unite, they could manage the city more efficiently than the current administration.
