The Supreme Court is set to hear multiple appeals filed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, challenging the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision to dismiss his bail requests in cases related to the May 9 riots.
A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui will take up the eight appeals today (Tuesday) at 9:30 AM.
The LHC, in its June 24 ruling led by Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, had concluded that Imran Khan was allegedly involved in a planned attack on military sites, which the government claims was executed after his arrest on May 9, 2023.
Imran filed his appeals in the Supreme Court on July 26, arguing that the prosecution failed to present consistent or credible evidence linking him to the alleged conspiracy. According to the petition, three contradictory versions were used by the prosecution to implicate him, differing in time, location, and witnesses. All of these narratives, the petition states, were dismissed by either the anti-terrorism courts or the LHC itself.
The petition also highlights that the prosecution’s claims relied on unverified accounts, including one by a police officer who allegedly overheard a conspiracy at Zaman Park on May 7 and another at Chakri Rest Area on May 4.
