Supreme Court Orders Eye Care, Phone Access for Imran Khan

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed authorities to provide PTI founder Imran Khan access to eye specialists and allow him to speak with his children by phone while in custody. The order was issued during a hearing concerning Khan’s health and prison conditions.

A two-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan reviewed a report submitted to the court about Khan’s situation. According to the report, Khan expressed satisfaction with security and food arrangements but raised concerns about inadequate medical facilities, specifically requesting specialized eye treatment.

During proceedings, the chief justice emphasized that all prisoners must receive equal medical care, stressing that Khan should not be given preferential treatment over other inmates. He reiterated that the principle of equality before the law must apply uniformly to all detainees regardless of status.

Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan assured the bench that the government would facilitate access to qualified eye specialists. The court subsequently ordered that a team of specialists examine Khan and ensure necessary treatment is provided. Authorities have been instructed to implement these measures before February 16.

The court also ruled that Khan should be permitted to communicate with his children by phone, noting that such contact is reasonable for someone currently in state custody. However, a request to allow a family member to be present during medical consultations was declined.

Additionally, the bench addressed the issue of books for Khan, stating they may be provided only if medical professionals consider them appropriate given his eye condition. The chief justice concluded by underscoring that providing adequate medical care to prisoners is the state’s responsibility and must be ensured.
