Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2, released ahead of the series finale, has ignited one of the most heated debates within its global fanbase in Netflix history, with reactions ranging from praise to strong backlash.
The controversy largely stems from the second half of the final season which dropped in late December, bringing three new episodes that were met with mixed reactions on social media. Many viewers took to platforms like X, Reddit, and YouTube to voice disappointment over pacing, narrative decisions, and emotional payoff. A significant portion of fans described Volume 2 as underwhelming compared to earlier seasons that were celebrated for suspense and character depth.
One of the most divisive moments occurred in Episode 7, where the character Will Byers comes out as gay. While some praised the scene for its emotional resonance and representation, others criticised it sharply, labelling it forced or misplaced within the high-stakes plot and even review-bombing the episode online.
The backlash quickly spread beyond usual fan frustration. A viral online petition—nicknamed “Cutgate”—has gathered hundreds of thousands of signatures, demanding that Netflix release alleged unseen or cut scenes that fans believe were removed before Volume 2’s release. Supporters argue that missing footage could have strengthened character arcs and narrative clarity.
While criticism is strong, it is not unanimous. Some long-time viewers defended Volume 2, arguing that the storytelling choices — including deeper character interactions — are best appreciated in the context of the entire final season. Others pointed out that the ongoing debate reflects how emotionally invested fans are after nearly a decade of storytelling.
Social media also saw creative fan theories flourish. One popular theory suggests that the villain Vecna has been manipulating not only the characters but the audience itself, hinting at possible meta twists in the finale.
With the series finale set to premiere on December 31, speculation and debate are reaching a peak. Whether the final episode will redeem Volume 2’s mixed reception or deepen the divide remains a central question for fans worldwide
