Spain Warns of Boycotting 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel Joins

Spain has sparked controversy by suggesting its men’s team might boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel qualifies for the tournament. The statement comes amid Madrid’s increasing calls to exclude Israel from international sports over its actions in Gaza.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has urged sports authorities to impose sanctions on Israel, similar to those applied to Russia after the Ukraine invasion. Socialist leader Patxi Lopez indicated that the government could push for a World Cup boycott if Israel remains in the competition.

Spain’s Sports Minister Pilar Alegria emphasized that “Sport is not, and cannot be, an island independent of what happens in the real world.” As European qualifiers continue, Spain is among the favorites for the 2026 World Cup, while Israel remains in contention despite being third in its qualifying group behind Norway and Italy.

FIFA and UEFA have not responded to Spain’s statements. Spain’s position, given its status in world football, could pressure governing bodies and resonates with growing calls for accountability in Gaza across the Muslim world. The situation will test whether FIFA maintains the traditional separation between politics and sport.
