Justice Afridi was sworn in a day earlier as Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice, with President Asif Ali Zardari officiating. Dignitaries, including Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, military leaders, governors, chief ministers, and key federal ministers, attended the event.
Justice Afridi’s appointment followed the retirement of Justice Qazi Faez Isa and was carried out per the 26th Amendment’s new procedure, which mandates the CJP to be chosen from the three senior-most judges based on recommendations from a Special Parliamentary Committee.
