Snowfall Brings Cold Weather Back to Gilgit-Baltistan

Unseasonal Snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan Shuts Down Babusar-Naran Highway

Unseasonal snowfall in various parts of Gilgit-Baltistan has brought a surprising return of cold weather to the region, catching tourists and locals off guard during what is usually a warmer month of May.

Visitors in the Diamer and Chilas areas were treated to a picturesque scene as snow blanketed the mountains, lowering temperatures significantly. The mercury dipped below freezing at key points, including Babusar Top, Nanga Parbat, and Battugah Top.

As a result, the Babusar-Naran highway — a vital route connecting Kaghan Valley’s Naran to Chilas — has been closed to traffic. The route had only recently reopened after a seven-month winter closure. Additionally, landslides at Kohistan’s Jajal point have further disrupted travel on the Karakoram Highway.

Babusar Top and Pass, located at an altitude of 13,700 feet, are among the most sought-after destinations for tourists during the summer months. However, the latest spell of snowfall has once again made access to these scenic locations difficult.

Authorities have advised travelers to avoid non-essential journeys to the affected areas until weather conditions improve and routes are cleared.
