Singapore Dissolves Parliament Ahead of First Poll Under PM Wong

Singapore’s parliament was officially dissolved on Tuesday, paving the way for a general election to be held within the next three months. This will mark the first major electoral test for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who succeeded Lee Hsien Loong in May 2024 as leader of the long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP).

The PAP, which has governed Singapore since independence in 1965, is widely expected to retain its dominance in parliament. However, the party’s share of the popular vote will be closely scrutinized following its weaker showing in the 2020 election.

The upcoming vote comes at a challenging time economically, as Singapore recently downgraded its 2025 growth forecast amid global trade concerns linked to U.S. tariffs. This has added pressure on the ruling party, whose popularity has declined over recent years while the opposition continues to make gradual gains.

A total of 97 lawmakers will be elected this time, four more than in 2020, from a combination of single-member and multi-member constituencies. PM Wong’s February budget, described by analysts as an “election budget,” included generous incentives in a bid to secure public support.
