Sindh Launches Updated Vehicle Fitness Certification Policy

The Sindh Assembly was informed on Friday that the provincial government has stepped up its crackdown on vehicles operating without proper fitness standards. Over the past year, authorities imposed fines totaling Rs. 820 million on more than 56,200 heavy vehicles found to be unfit for the roads.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon, who also manages the transport portfolio, shared these details during the Question Hour while answering queries from members of the assembly. He explained that enforcement teams carried out strict inspections across the province and issued challans to thousands of vehicles. These included 2,935 dumpers, 2,138 oil tankers, 183 tractors, 13,918 trailers, 30,917 trucks, and 6,109 water tankers, all penalized for failing to meet required safety and operational standards.

Memon noted that in the past, the process for issuing fitness certificates was largely manual and poorly documented. This lack of proper record-keeping made the system vulnerable to misuse, allowing even vehicles registered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to secure certificates from Sindh without thorough checks. To address these loopholes, the government has now fully digitized the certification system.

He emphasized that with the new computerized process in place, every vehicle must obtain a verified digital fitness certificate before being allowed on the roads. This move is aimed at improving transparency, ensuring compliance, and enhancing overall road safety for commuters.

The minister also highlighted developments in public transport services. He said the government is expanding its bus fleet, with several new buses already arriving at the port and approval granted for the purchase of an additional 500 vehicles. Currently, Sindh government buses serve around 200,000 passengers daily. Meanwhile, the Green Line bus service has also witnessed significant growth, with daily ridership increasing from 50,000 to 85,000 commuters.
