The Sindh Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has implemented the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2024, bringing major changes to vehicle number plate registration across the province.
Under the new law, all vehicle number plates in Sindh must now be registered in the name of the owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). This ensures that the official number plate holder is correctly linked to the registered individual.
Key Changes in Vehicle Registration
Officials explained that two new number plate series have been introduced, both tied to CNIC registration. Vehicle owners can now retain their existing number plate and transfer it to another vehicle purchased in their name. This system provides flexibility while ensuring that all vehicles remain registered under the correct owner.
The amendment officially came into force following a notification from the Sindh Excise Department. All vehicle owners are required to comply with the revised rules and register their number plates under the CNIC-based system.
Impact on Vehicle Owners
The new CNIC-linked registration aims to improve transparency and prevent fraudulent vehicle transfers in Sindh. Vehicle owners are advised to update their registration details and confirm that their number plates are correctly linked to their CNIC.
Authorities stated that the revised process will be implemented gradually, and citizens can contact the Excise Department for guidance on updating their vehicle information.
The Sindh government said this change is part of broader efforts to modernize vehicle registration, strengthen law enforcement, and improve record-keeping across the province. Vehicle owners are encouraged to follow the new regulations carefully to avoid penalties and ensure smooth compliance.
