Sindh Govt To Distribute Free High-Tech Navigation Sticks For Blind

The Sindh Govt has announced a new initiative to help visually impaired individuals navigate their surroundings more easily and safely. A locally developed, sensor-equipped scanner stick will soon be distributed free of cost across the province.

Developed by the Biomedical Engineering Department of NED University, the navigation stick represents a major advancement in assistive technology. It uses smart sensors to help users detect nearby obstacles and move independently. Officials said the innovation marks a first-of-its-kind effort in Sindh to support people with visual impairments through locally made technology.

According to Tauha Ahmed Farooqi, Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, the pilot program will begin later this month. In its first phase, the Sindh Govt will distribute the scanner sticks free of charge to eligible users. He added that Sindh has more than six million people living with physical or mental disabilities, including those with autism and visual challenges.

The initiative is a result of collaboration between the Sindh Govt and NED University, which have signed an agreement to jointly develop and distribute assistive devices. The navigation stick is one of several new technologies created under this partnership to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities.

Other devices being developed include MindFoster for mental wellness, Binaural Beats to boost focus, Neurofeedback Systems to enhance cognitive ability, and Digital Cognitive Assessment Tools to simplify diagnosis. Additionally, the project includes Trunk Orthosis Devices, Floor-to-Chair Patient Lifters, WalkAid for mobility assistance, HerCrampEase medicated pads for girls, and EasyMobility Aids for general movement support.
