The Sindh government has announced the release of a new film, ‘Mera Lyari’, aimed at countering the Indian movie Dhurandhar, which has faced criticism for its negative depiction of Pakistan and particularly the Lyari area of Karachi.
Sindh Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Sharjeel Inam Memon, highlighted the announcement in a social media post on X, stating that Dhurandhar is an example of deliberate propaganda against Pakistan and unfairly targets Lyari. He emphasized that Lyari should not be seen as a symbol of violence, but rather as a hub of culture, peace, talent, and resilience.
To address the misrepresentation, the Sindh government has produced Mera Lyari, which is scheduled for release next month. The film intends to showcase the true and positive image of Lyari to both national and international audiences, presenting it as a community of “peace, prosperity, and pride,” according to Minister Memon.
Two official posters of the film were shared by the minister, featuring prominent Pakistani actors Nadeem Ejaz and Samina Ahmed, alongside Dananeer Mobeen. The movie is produced by Ayesha Omar, with the script and direction handled by Abu Aleeha.
The announcement comes in response to the backlash surrounding Dhurandhar, which portrays Lyari as a conflict-ridden area. The Indian film stars Ranveer Singh as a RAW agent and Arjun Rampal as a Pakistani intelligence officer, and its depiction of Lyari as a war zone has sparked widespread criticism in Pakistan for being inaccurate and inflammatory.
Mera Lyari seeks to counter this narrative by highlighting the area’s rich cultural heritage, the talent of its residents, and the community’s spirit of resistance and resilience. Through storytelling and a strong cinematic representation, the Sindh government aims to offer an authentic perspective of Lyari, challenging the negative stereotypes and presenting the area in a positive light.
With a strong cast, a compelling script, and government support, the film is expected to bring attention to Lyari’s real identity and emphasize its significance as a peaceful and culturally vibrant part of Karachi.
