The Sindh government has announced a public holiday across the province on August 9 to observe the Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, the revered Sufi saint and national poet of Sindh.
According to Muhammad Khan, Sindh’s Secretary for Culture, the 282nd annual Urs celebrations will begin on Saturday. Preparations for the three-day event are complete, and all departments are on high alert to ensure smooth proceedings.
The Minister for Culture has invited the Governor of Sindh to officially open the festivities. Security measures have been strengthened, including a ban on the public display of weapons in Hyderabad during the celebrations.
Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai is widely respected as the greatest Sufi poet in the Sindhi language. His famous work, Shah Jo Risalo, is often compared to Rumi’s Mathnawi for its spiritual depth and poetic excellence.
Bhittai’s poetry highlights themes of love, tolerance, and mysticism, inspiring generations of devotees. Every year, his Urs is observed on 14 Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar, attracting visitors from across Sindh.
The three-day event at his shrine includes prayers, music, literary sessions, and cultural activities. In 2017, a 16-foot statue was installed at Bhit Shah to honor his lasting legacy.
The Sindh government’s declaration of a public holiday underscores the importance of this spiritual and cultural event for the province.
