Sindh Cabinet Approves Rules for Women in Agriculture

The Sindh cabinet has approved the Sindh Agriculture Women Workers Rules, granting women in farming, livestock, and fisheries equal wages, maternity benefits, and protection against harassment.

Supported by the International Labor Organization, the initiative also introduces the Benazir Women Agriculture Workers Card and establishes a Rs500 million endowment fund to support women workers’ welfare.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted that the rules formally recognize women’s contributions to agriculture, marking a first-of-its-kind effort in Pakistan to empower female laborers in the sector.

In addition, the cabinet approved the Student Attendance Monitoring and Redress System (SAMRS), a digital platform to track school attendance and enrollment. The system will address absenteeism through counseling and peer support, with full implementation across Sindh planned within one year.

Other key decisions include amendments to the Sindh Development and Maintenance of Infrastructure Cess (2026), expansion of the wheat release policy to private traders to stabilize prices, and allotment of four acres in Malir for a nursing school associated with Hasan Suleman Memorial Hospital, along with $7.6 million for hospital expansion.

Institutional appointments were also made, including Justice (Retd) Irshad Ali Shah as chairperson of the Sindh Revenue Board Appellate Tribunal and presiding officers for various Anti-Terrorism Courts. Minister Memon stressed the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, education reform, and infrastructure development across the province.
