Severe Heatwave to Hit Sindh from May 24 to June 1: PMD Issues Warning
People in Sindh should brace for a difficult week ahead, as weather experts warn of an intense heatwave expected to grip the province from May 24 to June 1. This alert follows the formation of a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, triggered by abnormally high sea surface temperatures.
The system, currently located near India’s western coast, has the potential to develop into a deep depression or even a cyclone—possibly named Shakti—by May 24 or 25, depending on how conditions evolve.

Karachi, in particular, is expected to face severe weather conditions. The suspension of sea breeze may cause daytime temperatures to rise above 40°C. Combined with high humidity, the perceived temperature will be even higher, especially in coastal areas. Indoor temperatures could also exceed outdoor levels, further exacerbating the situation for residents already enduring prolonged power outages.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), heatwave conditions are forecast to persist throughout the week, with high pressure in the upper atmosphere driving temperatures 4 to 6°C above normal in Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan from May 20 to May 24.
In central and upper Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, temperatures are expected to soar 5 to 7°C above normal. Additionally, dust storms and gusty winds may affect several plain areas due to extreme heat conditions.
