Large areas of Punjab and Sindh are facing severe flooding as the Indus River continues to overflow. The rising waters have put immense pressure on key Sindh Barrages, including Guddu, Sukkur, and Kotri, raising fears of further damage in the coming days.
Rescue and relief operations are ongoing as thousands of residents are shifted to safer places. In Punjab’s Muzaffargarh and Alipur, several villages remain submerged, with the provincial government leading relief efforts.
In Sindh, the floods have entered Kachha areas, forcing many families to leave their homes. The Irrigation Department reported alarming water levels at major Sindh Barrages. Guddu Barrage recorded inflows of 635,000 cusecs, while Sukkur registered 538,000 cusecs. Kotri Barrage also reported rising inflows of 278,000 cusecs, sparking concerns of more pressure downstream.
The floodwaters have damaged protective embankments in Ghotki and Kashmore, forcing urgent evacuations. In Manjhand and Aliabad, vast areas of farmland are underwater, destroying crops and deepening the suffering of local communities. A tragic incident was also reported when a young man drowned while bathing in floodwaters near Manjhand.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said that her cabinet members are monitoring relief camps and rejected claims of government inaction. Meanwhile, in Bahawalnagar, displaced families were given some relief when officials arranged a large screen in tent camps for children to watch the Pakistan vs India Asia Cup match.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah warned that water inflows in the province could reach 700,000 cusecs, far higher than initial estimates by NDMA. He urged the federal government to extend support through the Benazir Income Support Programme.
Despite the destruction, monsoon rains have replenished Pakistan’s reservoirs. WAPDA confirmed that Tarbela and Chashma are at full capacity, while Mangla is nearing its limit.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as Sindh Barrages remain under pressure from heavy floodwaters, with rescue teams working to safeguard communities.
