The Sikh community has strongly criticized India’s release of water at Kartarpur, calling it an act of “water aggression.” Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar leader Kulvinder Singh Cheema, in a video message, said the flooding desecrated the sacred site of Guru Nanak, noting that aggression is not only through “bombs and bullets.”
Cheema termed Operation Sindoor a “total failure,” accusing India of hostility toward Sikhs, and praised the Pakistan Army for preventing further harm at Kartarpur. He added that India’s actions have strengthened calls for Khalistan, urging Sikhs to unite and resist.
Flooding at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib
Historic Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur was submerged after the River Ravi’s floodwaters entered the complex. Several feet of water covered parts of the shrine, with the ground floor—including the mazaar and samadh—underwater. Reports indicated stagnant water inside, raising concerns about possible structural damage.
Authorities confirmed that the Sri Guru Granth Sahib was safe on the first floor. Pakistan Army teams evacuated pilgrims and staff, while officials announced the Kartarpur Corridor would stay closed until conditions improve. Sikh leaders in India urged both governments to take joint preventive measures. The Akal Takht’s officiating jathedar also requested a damage report from the PSGPC. Surrounding villages have also been hit hard, with homes, roads, and farmland inundated.
Kartarpur Corridor Closure
The Kartarpur Corridor, a key pilgrimage route for Sikhs, has remained shut since May 2025 amid rising Pakistan-India tensions. India suspended the passage citing security concerns and later extended the closure indefinitely, while Pakistan sealed the Zero Line Gate on its side.
Since its inauguration in 2019, the corridor symbolized rare goodwill by granting visa-free access to Indian pilgrims visiting the shrine. For many Sikhs, especially the thousands who travel during Baisakhi, its closure is both a spiritual and emotional setback, diminishing hopes of cross-border religious harmony
