Short-Term Inflation Surpasses 23% Amid Persistently High Food Price

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a 1.30 percent increase in the Sensitive Price Index-based inflation for the week ending June 13, 2024. This index monitors changes in prices of essential goods weekly, reflecting consumer price trends.

During this period, out of 51 monitored items, prices of 19 items increased, including tomatoes (up by 27.14%), chicken (11.75%), and electricity charges (8.73%). Conversely, prices decreased for 8 items, such as onions (down by 5%) and chilies powder (1.95%). Overall stability was noted in 24 items.

On a year-on-year basis, inflation rose by 23.03 percent. This increase was mainly driven by significant rises in gas charges (up 570%), onions (105.91%), and tomatoes (72.60%). Conversely, notable decreases were observed in wheat flour (down by 29.65%) and chicken (19.77%).

These figures highlight ongoing challenges in managing price stability amidst economic fluctuations and sector-specific pressures. The data underscores the importance of continued monitoring and policy adjustments to mitigate inflationary pressures and support sustainable economic growth.
