King Salman Appoints New Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia

King Salman bin Abdulaziz has named Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah Al Humaid as the new Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Senior Council of Scholars.

He succeeds Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh, who passed away at the age of 82 after holding the post for over 25 years.

According to Arab media, Dr. Al Humaid is among the most respected scholars in the Muslim world. He has served as senior Imam and Khateeb of Masjid Al Haram in Makkah for more than 40 years and has delivered the Hajj sermon at Masjid Namira in Arafat.

In addition to his religious responsibilities, he has been part of the Majlis Al Shura since 1993, including a period as its Speaker. He currently leads the International Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah and is a member of the Arabic Language Academy.

A recipient of the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam in 2016, Dr. Al Humaid’s appointment is seen as a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s religious leadership, following the legacy of Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, a leading figure in Islamic scholarship for decades.
