The Sindh High Court (SHC) has given temporary relief to a former judge. On Monday, the court extended an order that suspends the cancellation of his law degree. This decision involves former Islamabad High Court (IHC) judge Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.
The Karachi University (KU) syndicate had declared his degree void. The SHC’s new decision keeps that cancellation on hold. This provides a temporary win for the former judge in his ongoing legal battle.
A two-judge bench heard the case. It included Justice Yousuf Ali Saeed and Justice Abdul Mobeen Lakho. They were hearing a contempt plea against KU’s vice chancellor and registrar. The plea was filed because KU allegedly hid the SHC’s previous order from the IHC.
During the hearing, KU officials appeared before the court. The KU registrar argued that the contempt plea should be dismissed. He said the IHC had already given its final verdict on the degree. He also stated that KU did not act on the SHC’s October 3 order to suspend the degree cancellation.
The lawyer for Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, Barrister Salahuddin Ahmed, disagreed. He explained that KU’s order to cancel the degree was suspended by the SHC. This means the cancellation order legally does not exist at the moment. He argued that the IHC’s decision was based on an order that was already suspended.
Barrister Ahmed stressed the urgency of the matter. He said a judge was removed based on a suspended order. He believes this makes the IHC ruling flawed. The case involves a complex situation between rulings from two different high courts.
After hearing the arguments, the SHC bench extended its interim order. The suspension of the degree cancellation will now continue until the next hearing. The date for the next hearing will be set after the court’s winter vacation. This development adds another layer to the fake degree controversy surrounding Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.
This case highlights the legal challenges faced by the former judge. He was removed from his position at the IHC just last week. The IHC had ruled his degree was invalid. The SHC’s latest extension will keep the legal proceedings active.
