Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who was expected to play his farewell Test match against South Africa in Dhaka, has announced that he is unlikely to return to Bangladesh due to “security concerns.” Ongoing political unrest and protests against him have raised doubts about his participation in the match.
Shakib expressed uncertainty about his plans, stating via WhatsApp, “I am not sure where I am going next, but it is almost sure that I am not going home.” The unrest in Bangladesh, following the effective resignation of the Awami League government, has led to protests and arrests, with Shakib being named in a First Information Report (FIR) related to an alleged murder during the unrest.

Despite these challenges, Shakib remains part of the Bangladesh squad for the Test, though his return is uncertain. Protests against his presence at the stadium have escalated, and Shakib was advised to stay in Dubai, where he is currently in transit.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials and government advisers have commented on the situation, emphasizing that Shakib’s return is his decision. However, concerns for his safety and the country’s image have led some officials, including Youth and Sports adviser Asif Mahmud, to advise against his immediate return.
