A relentless heatwave has gripped much of Pakistan this week, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warning of soaring temperatures that could peak at a sweltering 48°C in some areas. The extreme weather conditions are expected to persist over the next several days, impacting millions across the country.
Southern Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan are bearing the brunt of the heat, with temperatures reported to be 4 to 6°C above seasonal norms. Central and northern regions — including Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — are also facing temperature spikes up to 7°C above average.

Sibi in Balochistan is likely to emerge as one of the hottest cities, with temperatures forecast to reach 48°C. Other high-temperature zones include Bahawalpur (45°C), Multan (44°C), Sukkur (45°C), and Nawabshah (46°C). Even Islamabad, typically more temperate, is expected to hit 42°C, while Lahore may climb to 43°C.
The PMD has indicated that while hot and dry weather will dominate the plains through the weekend, isolated rain and thunderstorms may bring slight relief to the northern and hilly areas on Friday and beyond. Until then, the plains will continue to endure punishing daytime heat.
Authorities have issued advisories urging citizens to stay hydrated, avoid the sun during peak hours, and pay extra attention to the vulnerable — including children, the elderly, and those with health conditions. Hospitals have been instructed to remain on alert to handle potential cases of heatstroke and dehydration.
