Severe Heatwave Alert Issued for Sindh, South Punjab, and Balochistan

Heatwave Alert: Sindh, South Punjab, Balochistan to Face Scorching Temperatures Until April 30

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Sindh, South Punjab, and Balochistan, warning of extreme temperatures from today until April 30.

A high-pressure system is expected to dominate the upper atmosphere, pushing daytime temperatures 5 to 7°C above normal in the southern regions. Other areas—including Islamabad, central and upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan—may also experience temperatures 4 to 6°C above average.

Relief Expected in May

The PMD anticipates that the heatwave will ease from May 1, as westerly winds are likely to bring rain and hailstorms to parts of Kashmir, Islamabad, north-east Punjab, upper KP, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Punjab Announces Early Summer Vacations

In light of the extreme weather, the Punjab Education Department has announced that summer vacations in schools will begin on June 1. However, Secretary School Education Punjab Khalid Nazir Wattoo has stated that vacations may start earlier if the heatwave worsens.

Climate Change & Public Advisory

The PMD also highlighted the role of climate change, noting that Pakistan remains among the most vulnerable nations to its effects. Rising global temperatures are contributing to more frequent and intense weather events, such as heatwaves, floods, and earthquakes.

Citizens are urged to take precautions, including:

  • Staying hydrated
  • Avoiding direct sunlight
  • Limiting outdoor activities during peak hours
