Seven Dead, Dozens Injured as Monsoon Rains Batter Punjab

At least seven people have died and 46 others were injured across Punjab in the last 24 hours due to heavy monsoon rains, according to Rescue 1122 and disaster-management officials. The downpour triggered a series of incidents, including roof and wall collapses, lightning strikes, and traffic accidents in several districts.

The worst-affected areas included Okara, where eight rain-related emergencies were reported. Fatalities were also confirmed in Muzaffargarh, Jhelum, Bahawalnagar, Okara, and Khanewal. A five-year-old girl in Okara was killed after a bamboo roof collapsed, while in Jhelum, two people died when a rickshaw plunged into a storm drain. Lightning strikes and wall collapses caused multiple injuries and deaths in other districts.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department had earlier forecast an early and intense monsoon spell from June 25 to July 1. Faisalabad received the heaviest rainfall, with 98mm in GMA Town, while other areas such as Kasur, Lahore, and Sheikhupura also recorded significant precipitation.

Authorities are on high alert, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issuing warnings for further heavy rainfall and potential urban flooding in several Punjab districts through June 28. The NDMA’s alerts cover major cities including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan.

Emergency services and highway authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, especially while traveling, as the monsoon continues to disrupt life across the province.
