The SC on Tuesday approved petitions requesting live broadcast of hearings on appeals related to the 26th Constitutional Amendment. This move aims to ensure transparency in judicial proceedings.
An eight-member bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin, ruled in favor of the petitioners, allowing the public to watch court proceedings live. The decision is seen as a significant step toward judicial openness.
During the hearing, the Additional Attorney General clarified that the decision to broadcast lies with the court itself. After discussion, the SC granted approval for live coverage of the appeals.
Justice Jamal Mandokhel warned that while live telecasts help inform the public, some people might misuse the coverage for non-constructive purposes. The bench emphasized maintaining decorum during broadcasts.
The court also agreed to hear former senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar’s petition in open court. Khokhar is challenging the registrar’s objections regarding the full court decision of the Practice and Procedure Committee. Lawyer Shahid Jamil argued that the committee’s decision remains valid and should be implemented. A chamber appeal against the registrar’s objections has also been filed.
Justice Aminuddin assured that the petition will be scheduled for public hearing, reinforcing the SC’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
During the session, lawyer Faisal Siddiqui made a humorous remark about Justice Aminuddin’s retirement timeline, which led to a light-hearted exchange in the courtroom. This brief moment of levity preceded the adjournment of the hearing until 11:30 am the following day.
The approval of live broadcasts by the SC highlights the judiciary’s effort to keep the public informed while maintaining judicial integrity. Legal experts believe this step will strengthen public trust in the judicial process and improve understanding of constitutional matters among citizens.
