Fact-Check: No New Rs 1,000 Note Issued by SBP, Says Central Bank

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has strongly denied claims about the release of a new Rs 1,000 note SBP. The clarification comes after misleading visuals and videos went viral on social media platforms, especially TikTok.

A TikTok video shared on June 23, 2025, claimed that a new 1,000-rupee note had been issued by the SBP. The video showed a stack of white-colored notes and quickly gained over two million views. Many users praised the design, while others criticized it, calling it less practical.

However, SBP has confirmed that no such currency note has been introduced. Speaking to AFP on July 10, SBP spokesperson Noor Ahmed stated the viral posts were based on misinformation. He urged people to verify such claims only through the bank’s official website or social media accounts.

A detailed search on SBP’s official platforms as of July 17, 2025, shows no announcement or update regarding any new design for the Rs 1,000 note. In fact, the visuals that went viral appear to match a design shared earlier during a currency design competition, not legal tender.

The fake note also lacks key security features found in genuine currency. These include the signature of former SBP governor Yaseen Anwar, Braille identification marks, a seven-digit serial number, and the year of issuance.

Additionally, an Instagram video posted on June 24 also circulated similar visuals, further fueling public confusion.

The central bank reminded citizens that only it holds the authority to issue legal currency in Pakistan. Any changes in note design or issuance will be officially communicated by SBP.
