Advisor to the Prime Minister, Rana Sanaullah, has confirmed that the decision regarding the “‘Continuation’” of the system has been taken. The announcement was made after a key meeting of PML-N leadership in Murree.
Speaking on a private TV channel, Sanaullah said the system’s “‘Continuation’” could last for five or ten years. He emphasized that any decision will remain fully in line with the Constitution. Senior party leaders discussed the matter in detail to ensure transparency and compliance with legal norms.
Sanaullah also highlighted the importance of political consensus for new dam projects. He stressed that all parties should work together to approve resolutions and address climate change challenges. Commenting on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, he suggested that Gandapur meet the PTI founder to encourage negotiation with political parties, calling it a positive step for national unity.
The discussion comes amid renewed debate over the controversial Kalabagh Dam. Gandapur recently voiced strong support for the project, stating it should benefit the country as a whole rather than provincial or personal interests. He pointed out that earlier funding could have prevented some recent flood and landslide damages. The KP government has already started smaller dam projects in Lakki Marwat, Karak, and Peshawar.
Gandapur’s remarks created a split within PTI. Party Chairman Barrister Gohar supported building dams with provincial consensus, including Kalabagh. However, senior leader Asad Qaiser dismissed the statements as personal opinions, emphasizing smaller dams could be prioritized.
Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan backed the need for a national consensus on dam construction. He stressed that water is Pakistan’s most critical issue and that any project should involve all four provinces. Khan welcomed Gandapur’s support and reiterated that collective decision-making is essential for solving Pakistan’s water crisis.
The discussions on “‘Continuation’” of the system and new dam projects highlight the government’s efforts to combine constitutional compliance with national development priorities.
