Samsung Unveils the Slimmest Flagship Yet: S25 Edge with Enhanced AI Features

Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) unveiled its slimmest flagship model to date, the S25 Edge, which boasts advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The new launch positions Samsung ahead of its primary competitor, Apple (AAPL.O), in the premium smartphone market.

Slimmer, Lighter, and More Portable

The S25 Edge is designed to meet the growing demand from younger consumers, particularly those in their 20s and 30s, who are seeking more portable smartphones without compromising on performance.

Samsung officials explained, “The feedback was clear — users wanted a slimmer device that was easy to carry without sacrificing power.” To achieve this, the company made structural changes to internal components, including the printed circuit board (PCB) and thermal systems, to reduce the device’s thickness.

Strategic Move Ahead of Apple

Analysts view the launch as a strategic move to get ahead of Apple, which is expected to unveil a thinner iPhone in the latter part of this year.

Senior analyst Ryu Young-ho of NH Investment & Securities noted, “By releasing the S25 Edge a few months ahead of Apple, Samsung is targeting consumers looking for thinner smartphones and could potentially impact Apple’s upcoming launch. This seems like a well-calculated decision to capture that demand segment.”

Key Features and Availability

The S25 Edge will hit the shelves in South Korea on May 23, followed by the United States on May 30. The device will be available in about 30 countries, including China and several European markets.

Priced starting at $1,099, the S25 Edge features a 6.7-inch (170 mm) display and a 5.8 mm thick body, making it slightly larger than the basic S25 model, but only marginally heavier.

AI-Powered Experience

Samsung has incorporated its latest AI technologies into the S25 Edge, including multimodal AI, which enables users to interact with the device through both vision and voice in real-time. The camera now allows users to ask questions and receive responses, making the device more intuitive and interactive.

Addressing Concerns About Performance and Heat

Despite concerns about the device’s thin design affecting performance or heat management, Samsung assured consumers that the S25 Edge would not face such issues. Samsung’s Executive Vice President, Moon Sung-hoon, addressed the potential concerns, saying, “We’ve engineered a thinner vapor chamber to fit the slim design, ensuring the device operates smoothly without overheating. We’re confident the S25 Edge will perform excellently.”

Samsung Surpasses Apple in Q1 2025 Smartphone Market Share

Samsung has taken the lead in the global smartphone market for the first quarter of 2025, capturing 20% of the global share, slightly surpassing Apple, which holds 19%, according to Counterpoint Research.

The launch of the S25 Edge further strengthens Samsung’s position as a major player in the premium smartphone segment, providing cutting-edge technology with a sleek, portable design.
