Russia Offers Mediation As Pakistan-India Tensions Rise Over Kashmir

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has extended Moscow’s offer to mediate between Pakistan and India amid rising tensions over the Kashmir dispute. In a recent phone conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Lavrov emphasised Russia’s readiness to assist in pursuing a political settlement, should both Islamabad and New Delhi express willingness.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the dialogue focused heavily on the spike in tensions following the April 22 terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area of Indian-occupied Kashmir, which claimed at least 26 lives. Lavrov echoed the need for diplomacy and restraint from both sides to prevent further escalation, underscoring Moscow’s concern over the fragile regional situation.

During the call, Ishaq Dar dismissed India’s accusations against Pakistan as baseless and criticised New Delhi’s inflammatory rhetoric. He also condemned India’s unilateral move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a clear breach of international commitments. Dar reiterated Pakistan’s proposal for an international, transparent investigation into the recent incidents.

Lavrov’s outreach to both Pakistani and Indian leadership highlights Russia’s longstanding interest in South Asian stability, especially given its historical ties and strategic relations with both countries. Whether both nations will accept Moscow’s offer of mediation remains uncertain amid the current diplomatic strain.
