For years, the figure of 500 Million has defined the jurisdiction of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). This threshold was introduced through amendments in 2022 to focus on large corruption cases. The aim was to keep NAB away from smaller financial disputes.
At that time, the rule was simple. Cases below 500 Million were generally outside NAB’s authority. This helped reduce pressure on the system and improved efficiency. The reform was seen as a step toward better accountability.
However, this clarity has now changed.
In 2026, a new amendment was introduced under Act No. XIV of 2026. This law changed how the 500 Million threshold works. Instead of being fixed, the amount is now linked to inflation. The adjustment is based on data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
This means the value of 500 Million is no longer constant. It now acts as a base figure that increases each year. The change reflects the declining purchasing power of money over time.
Inflation has remained high in Pakistan since 2022. In many years, it has stayed in double digits. As a result, the real value of money has dropped significantly. When adjusted for inflation, the original 500 Million threshold may now be close to Rs. 900 million or even Rs. 1 billion.
This shift has major implications. Cases that once fell under NAB’s scope may no longer qualify. For example, a case worth Rs. 600 million may now fall below the updated threshold.
The change also affects legal procedures. Jurisdiction is a key factor in any investigation. If NAB takes up a case below the adjusted limit, it could face legal challenges. This makes accurate calculation very important.
Under the new system, NAB must calculate the inflation-adjusted value before taking action. It cannot rely on the old fixed figure of 500 Million. Each case must be assessed using updated data.
The purpose of the original law remains the same. It aims to focus on major corruption cases involving public funds. The inflation adjustment helps maintain the real value of the threshold.
At the same time, the system has become more complex. What was once a simple number is now a moving target. Legal experts may need to interpret these changes in court.

Overall, the idea of 500 Million has changed. It is no longer a fixed benchmark. It is now a dynamic figure that grows with inflation, reshaping how NAB operates.
