The federal government has approved a financial bailout package worth Rs. 2 billion for Pakistan’s Leading University, Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad. The move aims to help the institution overcome its severe financial crisis and continue its academic and research activities without disruption.
According to officials, the Finance Ministry has already authorized the release of Rs. 500 million — 25 percent of the total amount — as the first installment. The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has directed that the funds be released immediately to stabilize the university’s financial operations.
The ECC also instructed the Ministry of Education to conduct a detailed assessment of the university’s income and expenditure. The ministry has been asked to prepare a report highlighting areas that require structural reform to ensure financial discipline.
Pakistan’s Leading University has also been directed to revise and resubmit its sustainability plan. The Education Ministry emphasized that the new plan should focus on long-term stability, improved governance, and efficient resource management to reduce dependency on government funds.
Officials stated that the Rs. 2 billion bailout package was originally included in the federal budget for the fiscal year 2025–26. The decision reflects the government’s commitment to supporting higher education and maintaining academic excellence across public institutions.
Pakistan’s Leading University, QAU, is recognized globally for its contributions to education and research. However, in recent years, it has faced growing budget constraints, rising operational costs, and administrative challenges that have strained its resources.
The newly approved bailout is expected to provide short-term relief while enabling structural reforms. Authorities believe that with better management and strategic planning, Pakistan’s Leading University will regain financial stability and continue to uphold its reputation as a center of academic excellence in the country.
