The long-anticipated dualization of the Rawalpindi-Kahuta Road, a key route linking Rawalpindi to Azad Kashmir, has officially been included in the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) for FY 2025-26.
With an estimated cost of Rs. 23.84 billion, the project aims to modernize infrastructure, cut travel time, and resolve persistent traffic and safety issues along the route.

Plans include constructing a four-lane overhead bridge at Sihala Railway Gate and developing bypasses at Sihala and Kahuta. Once completed, the journey between Rawalpindi and Kahuta is expected to take just 40 minutes.
Spanning 28.4 kilometers from Kacheri Chowk in Rawalpindi to Main Bazaar in Kahuta, the road serves as a major connection to Azad Kashmir. Currently, its single-lane condition causes severe congestion, frequent accidents, and travel times often exceeding two hours.
Approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in July 2023, the project is now under the PSDP and will be executed by the National Highway Authority (NHA), promising safer and faster travel for daily commuters.
