WASA Imposes Hefty Fines for Water Wastage in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD – In a latest effort to address the escalating issue of water wastage, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has announced strict fines for both domestic and commercial users found using household water for non-essential activities such as washing cars and cleaning floors.

A notification issued by WASA revealed that individuals caught wasting water in these ways will face a fine of Rs 20,000. For first-time offenders, domestic users will incur a fine of Rs 10,000, while commercial users will be fined Rs 20,000. A second violation will lead to the disconnection of the water supply.

This decision comes in response to a court order calling for a comprehensive strategy to prevent water misuse. The court underscored the urgency of protecting and conserving water resources in light of growing concerns over water scarcity in the country.

The move is particularly timely as the wastage of water for non-essential purposes like car washing and cleaning large paved areas has become a significant issue, especially in urban areas. The rising demand for water, coupled with ongoing water shortages across many regions of Pakistan, has led local authorities, including WASA, to take swift action to curb excessive consumption.

WASA’s initiative aims to promote efficient water usage and raise awareness about the importance of water conservation as Pakistan faces increasing challenges related to water availability.
