Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the Roshan Pankha program to help households save on electricity bills. The initiative aims to replace 10 million old and inefficient fans with energy-saving models. Each fan could reduce electricity costs by up to Rs. 12,000 per year.
The launch ceremony was attended by Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Leghari, Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik, and NEECA Managing Director Dr. Sardar Moazzam Humayun Khan. Dr. Khan briefed officials on how the Roshan Pankha program will be implemented across the country.
Dr. Musadik Malik said the program will especially benefit low-income households struggling with high electricity bills. He added that the initiative is expected to begin within 90 days. Malik highlighted that the project aligns with the government’s goal of providing economic relief to citizens.
The minister also pointed out that frequent floods and high energy costs have placed a heavy burden on households. Floods in the past few years have affected 40 million people, claimed around 6,000 lives, and displaced nearly two million children. Economic losses from floods have reached almost 9.8 percent of GDP.
Energy Minister Sardar Awais Leghari said the Roshan Pankha program will also support long-term reforms in Pakistan’s power sector. He noted that electricity demand has fallen due to increased solar adoption. Currently, national demand stands at around 8,000 megawatts.
Leghari added that electricity tariffs for protected consumers have dropped by 35–40 percent. Industrial electricity costs have also been reduced by 35 percent to 11.5 cents per unit. The government aims to achieve 90 percent clean energy generation by 2034.
Under the program, citizens can either replace or sell their old fans. The initiative is expected to reduce pressure on the national grid and remove the need for new power plants. Existing plants should meet demand for the next 25 to 30 years.
