Cristiano Ronaldo secured a dramatic late victory for Portugal as they defeated Scotland 2-1 in the Nations League on Sunday. The 39-year-old legend netted his 901st career goal in the 88th minute, sealing the win after Bruno Fernandes had equalised earlier. The victory helped Portugal maintain their perfect start in League A Group 1.
Scotland stunned the hosts early on, with Scott McTominay heading home in the 7th minute from Kenny McLean’s excellent cross, giving Scotland hope for their first win over Portugal since 1980. Despite a solid defensive display and a series of saves by Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, they were unable to hold onto their lead.

Bruno Fernandes equalised for Portugal in the 54th minute, capitalising on a shot that Gunn could have stopped. As the game wore on, Portugal’s attack intensified, with Joao Felix coming close twice and Ronaldo hitting the post with a header. Ronaldo eventually scored the winner, tapping in from Nuno Mendes’ cross.
This defeat extended Scotland’s winless streak to eight competitive matches, while Portugal leads the group with six points. Croatia, who beat Poland 1-0, follow with three points. After the match, Scotland manager Steve Clarke lamented the loss, stating, “We deserved more from the game.”
Fernandes, making his 600th career appearance, praised Ronaldo’s impact, saying, “His influence is always there. Now, he’s aiming for 1,000 goals.”
