Retaking Bagram Could Resemble Afghan Re-Invasion Sources Warn

US President Donald Trump has renewed interest in retaking Bagram air base in Afghanistan, citing its strategic location near China. Experts and officials, however, warn that the operation could resemble a full-scale re-invasion.

Speaking in London, Trump said, “It’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons,” emphasizing the base’s geopolitical importance. Bagram served as the main hub for US forces during the two-decade Afghanistan war and once hosted fast-food outlets, shops, and a large prison complex.

Trump suggested the US could regain control of the base with Taliban consent. However, US officials note that retaking Bagram would require tens of thousands of troops, advanced air defenses, and complex logistical planning due to Afghanistan’s landlocked geography and security threats.

Even if an agreement with the Taliban were reached, US forces would face risks from Islamic State and al Qaeda militants. Iran’s advanced missile capabilities could also pose a serious threat to any US presence at the base.

A former senior defense official said that while Trump highlighted Bagram’s proximity to China, the military advantage might be limited. “The risks sort of outweigh the advantages,” the official said, noting the challenges of securing and maintaining the sprawling airfield.

The base was abandoned in 2021 during the US withdrawal, which Trump previously criticized, claiming a smaller US presence could have been maintained. The Pentagon is currently reviewing the chaotic withdrawal and its lessons for future operations.

US officials have also held talks with the Taliban over Americans held in Afghanistan. Envoys including Zalmay Khalilzad and Adam Boehler met Taliban representatives to address hostage and security concerns.

Analysts warn that retaking Bagram would be a costly and politically sensitive move, requiring careful planning to avoid escalating tensions in the region. The operation’s feasibility remains highly uncertain, even with potential Taliban cooperation.
