Nawaz Sharif Flyover Opens to Traffic Ahead of Formal Inauguration
The newly constructed Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road, Rawalpindi, has been opened to traffic, despite the postponement of its formal inauguration by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which was originally set for June 30.
Built at a cost of Rs. 2.3 billion, the flyover is a key part of Rawalpindi’s broader infrastructure development project, which also includes two vehicle underpasses and a pedestrian underpass on Mall Road, totaling over Rs. 4.38 billion in investment.

Underpasses Await CM’s Approval
While construction of all structures has been completed, the underpasses remain closed pending CM Maryam Nawaz’s rescheduled visit for their official opening. The Punjab Communication and Works Department stated that these facilities will follow the same early opening protocol used for the Nawaz Sharif Flyover once formal approval is given.
Future Expansion Plans Underway
Authorities have also finalized proposals for new underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course, and Chairing Cross on Peshawar Road. In addition, a larger infrastructure plan is under review for two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk, though no timeline has been officially announced.
These developments are part of an ambitious effort to reduce traffic congestion and modernize urban mobility across Rawalpindi, positioning the city for more efficient transit and economic activity
