In a joint press conference with India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, Ashwin revealed that the Brisbane Test would mark his final appearance on the international stage. “I won’t take much of your time; today is my last day as an international cricketer,” he said, expressing gratitude for the memories created with his teammates, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara. Ashwin acknowledged the support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and his coaches over the years.

The spinner, who has been an integral part of India’s cricketing legacy, left the press conference shortly after his announcement without addressing questions from journalists. Rohit Sharma, when asked about Ashwin’s decision, expressed respect for his teammate’s choice, emphasizing that it was a personal decision.

Before his formal announcement, a touching moment had gone viral on social media, showing Virat Kohli embracing Ashwin in the dressing room, which fueled speculation about his retirement.

Ashwin had recently played in the second Test of the series against Australia in Adelaide, where he managed to take just one wicket across two innings. Despite retiring from international cricket, Ashwin will continue to play in the T20 format and will represent Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 IPL season.
