Rashid Latif States 'No Need to Hold Champions Trophy Anymore'

Rashid Latif Questions the Need for the Champions Trophy Amid India’s Participation Uncertainty

Former Pakistan cricket captain Rashid Latif expressed his concerns over the upcoming Champions Trophy on Sunday, suggesting that there may no longer be a need for the event given the ongoing controversy surrounding India’s participation.

Latif proposed that it would be more strategic for Pakistan to refuse to play before India makes a decision to boycott the tournament. “It would be better that Pakistan refuse to play before India refuses to participate in the event,” he stated, acknowledging the complex diplomatic issues surrounding the Champions Trophy stalemate.

Latif further mentioned the uncertainty regarding the tournament’s future if India decides to pull out, saying, “It is good for us that we are fighting our case pertaining to the Champions Trophy. But I am not sure where we will stand if India goes for a boycott of the mega-event.”

While discussing the broader state of Pakistani cricket, Latif emphasized the importance of grassroots development. He highlighted that players with solid experience in club cricket could be strong leaders, suggesting that a captain with such background might be the best choice for the team.

Latif also urged for more investment in grassroots cricket, warning that neglecting this area could prevent Pakistan from discovering future cricketing legends like Wasim Akram and Javed Miandad. “No benefits will be reaped if you do not invest in grassroots cricket,” he cautioned.
