Quetta Police Gets Khadija Shah's Two Day Transitory Remand

On Monday, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore granted a two-day transitory remand of fashion designer and PTI supporter Khadija Shah to Quetta police. The case relates to violent protests in the country on May 9.

Khadija Shah, currently held in Kot Lakhpat Jail, was arrested for attacks on Lahore corps commander house, Askari Tower, and torching police vehicles near Rahat bakery in cantonment. All cases against her were being heard in Lahore.

Earlier on Nov 15, she was granted bail in the last case of May 9 protests but was re-arrested on Nov 17 under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance for 30 days. Shah challenged the detention in the Lahore High Court, terming it “unlawful and unconstitutional.”

Today, the Punjab government withdrew Shah’s detention orders, but before her release, Quetta police sought her two-day transit remand. The ATC accepted, instructing them to present Shah on Dec 13.

During the hearing, Punjab IG informed the court about the ATC decision. The judge directed Shah’s presentation, warning to summon the Punjab police chief if not complied.

Shah’s legal issues stem from her arrest during nationwide unrest on May 9 and 10. She voluntarily turned herself in on May 23. Despite bail in all cases, she remained in custody. In October, Shah penned an open letter from jail, describing the plight of imprisoned women from the May 9 events. During a recent hearing, she expressed her desire to contest the next general elections.
