Putin Calls Russia a ‘Loyal Friend’ of Iran Amid Gulf Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Iran, calling Russia a “loyal friend and reliable partner” during the ongoing Gulf war.

In a statement, Putin extended greetings to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He expressed hope that the Iranian people would overcome current challenges with resilience and unity.

Despite Moscow’s public backing, the scope of its practical support remains unclear. Some Iranian sources claim that Russian assistance has been limited amid what is described as Tehran’s most severe crisis since the 1979 revolution.

Putin also condemned the killing of Iran’s supreme leader as a “cynical” act. He criticized Western military actions in the region, emphasizing that conflicts must be addressed through diplomacy.

Separately, reports indicate that Russia proposed a deal to the United States. Moscow suggested halting intelligence-sharing with Iran in exchange for Washington stopping similar support to Ukraine. The proposal was reportedly rejected by the US.

Officials clarified that Russia’s strategic partnership with Iran does not include a mutual defense clause. While Moscow maintains strong diplomatic ties, it is not obligated to provide military support.

Meanwhile, Russia appears to benefit economically from rising global oil prices caused by the Gulf conflict. Analysts note that higher energy revenues strengthen Moscow’s economic position even amid international tensions.
