Punjab has announced that underground electrical installations will be mandatory for all new housing societies in Lahore to improve safety and infrastructure standards. The decision was taken during the third meeting of the Energy Department’s Steering Committee, chaired by Provincial Energy Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar. Officials reviewed the current electricity distribution system, potential hazards related to consumer installations, and the progress of three working groups formed to address these challenges.
During the meeting, participants discussed a comprehensive plan to upgrade electricity poles, meters, and wiring systems across the city. Authorities proposed installing electricity meters in organized metal frames to enhance safety and improve management. The minister directed the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) to immediately repair or straighten tilted and damaged electricity poles, starting with major roads before expanding the work to markets and commercial areas.
The minister further emphasized that underground electrical installations must be compulsory for all new housing societies. He called for the preparation of a master plan to modernize electricity and communication networks in Lahore and instructed officials to monitor the performance of relevant departments on a daily basis to ensure timely implementation.
LESCO officials informed the meeting that a survey of 22 major markets in Lahore has been completed and 33 key roads have been identified for improvement. Authorities aim to complete development work on major roads within two months. Meanwhile, a representative from the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) stated that work on underground communication networks and cable trays is already underway to support better urban planning and infrastructure development in the city.
