The Punjab government is planning a major update to Punjab Traffic rules by introducing stricter fines and a license point system.
The traffic police have prepared a detailed summary of the proposed changes. It has cleared departmental approvals and will now be submitted to the provincial cabinet for final approval.
Overspeeding will result in fines ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 20,000, with four points deducted from the driver’s license. Violating traffic signals or driving in the wrong direction will carry fines between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 15,000, also with four points deducted.
Rash driving will be penalized with fines of Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 15,000 and four points. Overloading vehicles will attract Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 15,000 in fines, along with four penalty points. The use of pressure horns will result in Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 10,000 fines and two points deducted.
Currently, most traffic fines in Punjab range from Rs. 100 to Rs. 500, except for five violations where courts allow up to Rs. 2,000. Once approved, the new system will replace manual challaning with e-challaning, streamlining enforcement and reducing delays.
Officials said the updated Punjab Traffic fines are designed to improve road safety, reduce accidents, and enforce compliance with traffic rules. Drivers are advised to follow regulations carefully to avoid heavy penalties.
The new system is expected to be implemented soon after cabinet approval. This update marks a significant step toward modernizing traffic management and ensuring safer roads across Punjab.
