Punjab to Review School Holiday Extension on August 29 due to Floods

The Punjab government is monitoring the worsening flood situation and may extend school holidays.

According to reports, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat will make an announcement on August 29 regarding whether holidays will be prolonged due to the emergency in several districts.

The School Education Department stated that all provincial institutions are being brought together on one platform to ensure coordinated relief, rehabilitation, and safety efforts in flood-hit areas.

Classes from grade 1 to 8 are scheduled to resume on September 1, but the final decision will depend on updated flood assessments and recommendations from local authorities.

Earlier today (August 27), schools in Sialkot were closed after the city recorded its heaviest rainfall in 11 years, with over 335 millimeters reported in various areas. Heavy rains caused urban flooding in Rangpura, Allama Iqbal Chowk, Dara Araiyan, and Prem Nagar, while the Meteorological Department warned of more rain in the coming days.

Flash floods in Dekh Nullah submerged several villages, prompting rescue teams to evacuate residents to safer locations.

In view of the situation, Deputy Commissioner Sialkot, Saba Asghar Ali, declared a local holiday across all educational institutions. Citizens have been advised to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from rivers and flood-prone areas. Section 144 has been imposed, with strict action warned against violations.
