The Punjab government has announced March 30, 2027, as the target completion date for the Gujranwala Mass Transit Project. The modern public transport system is expected to improve travel across the city and provide residents with a faster and more reliable transport option.
According to the project director, construction work is progressing, and officials are working to complete the project within the announced timeline. The mass transit system, also known as the Gujranwala Yellow Line, is one of the major public transport projects currently underway in Punjab.
The planned transit corridor will stretch about 31.5 kilometers from Gakhar to Aimanabad. The route will pass through important residential, commercial, and industrial areas of Gujranwala. Authorities believe the project will make daily commuting easier for thousands of people.
The updated project design received approval from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in May 2026. After approving the revised plan, the government directed officials to introduce feeder bus services. These buses will connect nearby neighborhoods with the main transit corridor.
One of the major changes in the updated design is the addition of underground sections. The government has approved two tunnel sections to reduce traffic disruption in busy parts of the city. Around 17 to 19 kilometers of the route will now run underground.
The latest design includes 24 stations, including two underground stations. Officials believe the underground sections will improve traffic flow while making the transport system more efficient for passengers.
The project will also include three transit depots. These facilities will be built at Gharjakh, Chand Da Qila, and Gondlanwala. The depots will support the operation and maintenance of the transit system after it becomes operational.
As part of the green transport plan, solar power systems will be installed at all stations and depots. Authorities also plan to establish a modern command and control center. This facility will monitor security, operations, and passenger services throughout the network.
Another important feature of the project is a 62-kilometer drainage system. The drainage network will be built along both sides of the transit corridor. Officials say this will help prevent rainwater from collecting on nearby roads and reduce urban flooding.
When the project was first announced, the estimated cost was Rs. 62.7 billion. The foundation stone was laid in December 2025 by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
At that time, officials said the transport system would operate using green energy. The fleet is expected to include at least 36 electric buses. The project is also expected to serve around 51,000 passengers every day once fully operational.
However, the final project cost may increase because several design changes have been approved since the original announcement. The addition of longer underground sections and other infrastructure improvements could affect the overall budget.
Construction work is currently continuing on the main transit corridor, underground sections, depots, underpasses, and supporting road infrastructure. Government officials say the work is progressing according to the revised development plan.

Once completed, the project is expected to become one of the most significant urban transport systems in Punjab, helping thousands of residents travel more safely and efficiently every day.
