Punjab Revises Practical Exam Marking Rules Significantly

The government of Punjab has introduced a new policy that removes the authority of examiners at examination centers to award full marks in board practical examinations. The change is aimed at improving transparency and ensuring fairness in the evaluation process for students across the province.

Under the revised system, the written portion of practical exams will now be assessed through a centralized marking mechanism managed by the respective education boards. This new arrangement will be implemented across all educational boards operating in Punjab, ensuring a uniform marking process.

Officials explained that the previous system allowed examiners at examination centers to award full marks, which sometimes led to concerns about favoritism, recommendations, and unfair advantages for certain students. With the introduction of centralized checking, authorities hope to eliminate such practices and maintain a more merit-based evaluation structure.

According to the new rules, the total 30 marks allocated for practical examinations will be divided into separate components. The written section of the practical exam will be evaluated directly by the board through the centralized marking system. Meanwhile, examiners present at the examination centers will only assign limited marks related to viva voce and the student’s practical performance during the exam.

As a result, the powers of examiners stationed at the centers have been significantly restricted. Their role will now mainly focus on assessing the student’s demonstration of practical work and answering of oral questions, while the major portion of marks will be awarded through board-level assessment.

The new policy will apply to practical examinations in key science and technology subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Studies. Chairman of the Task Force Committee for Boards, Muzammil Mahmood, stated that the practice of conducting only formal or superficial practical exams will no longer be acceptable. He emphasized that practical exam marks will now be granted strictly on merit under the updated system.
