Punjab Announces New Traffic Rules to Reduce Accidents

With smog worsening across Punjab, particularly in Lahore, the provincial government has ordered traffic and law enforcement agencies to step up efforts to improve air quality and ensure safer travel during winter.

Punjab Police revealed that during the current anti-smog drive, 22 cases have been registered. So far, 1,539 individuals have been fined a total of Rs. 3 million, while another 53 received warnings. Authorities also noted 1,317 violations from smoke-emitting vehicles, along with 8 industrial and 14 brick kiln violations. Overall, more than 82,600 breaches have resulted in over Rs. 210 million in penalties.

DIG Traffic Punjab Waqas Nazir has directed all Chief and District Traffic Officers to strictly enforce pollution-control measures. He announced that action will be taken against vehicles producing excessive smoke.

To ensure effective monitoring, joint teams from the traffic police, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and transport department will be deployed.

Nazir also emphasized proper vehicle upkeep, particularly headlights, indicators, and mirrors during the fog season, warning that there will be zero tolerance for violations of smog-related SOPs. He called for intensified operations near highways, industrial zones, and agricultural areas to reduce pollution and protect public health.
