The Government of Punjab has released the official Basant anthem titled #PhirAaiBasant, formally recognizing Basant as a cultural tradition of the province under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The anthem marks a symbolic revival of the festival while placing it within a regulated and structured framework to ensure safety and public order.
According to officials, the initiative reflects a broader cultural vision long associated with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, focusing on preserving Punjab’s heritage and shared traditions. By launching an official anthem, the provincial government has positioned Basant as a recognized cultural celebration rather than an informal activity, acknowledging its deep historical roots in Lahore and other parts of Punjab.
The government has emphasized that Basant celebrations this year will take place under strict safety and regulatory arrangements. Roof No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) have been made mandatory for kite flying, aiming to prevent overcrowding and unsafe practices. In addition, the sale and purchase of kites and string will only be allowed through government-authorised dealers to curb the circulation of hazardous materials.
For aviation safety, kite flying has been strictly prohibited in areas surrounding Lahore Airport. Authorities have also introduced safety requirements for motorcycle riders, making the use of protective safety wire mandatory to reduce the risk of injuries caused by kite strings during the festival period.
To support public mobility and minimize traffic congestion, the Punjab government has announced free public transport services for three days, from February 6 to February 8. Officials said the move is intended to encourage citizens to rely on buses and other public transport instead of motorcycles and private vehicles, reducing accident risks and easing pressure on roads.
The provincial government stated that these measures are designed to strike a balance between cultural celebration and public safety. Officials stressed that the aim is to allow Basant to be celebrated in a safe, organized, and responsible manner, avoiding the incidents that led to restrictions in the past.
The official anthem #PhirAaiBasant has been released on the Government of Punjab’s digital platforms and has already begun gaining attention online. Authorities hope the anthem and associated arrangements will help revive Basant as a positive cultural symbol while maintaining strict safety standards across the province.
