The government of Punjab, Pakistan has introduced strict measures to manage the ongoing petroleum crisis, including a major reduction in fuel allowances for government vehicles. As part of the new policy, petrol and diesel allowances for official vehicles have been reduced by 50 percent in an effort to conserve fuel and limit unnecessary consumption.
The decision was approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who also directed that the provision of official petrol for provincial ministers be completely suspended until the fuel situation stabilizes. The move is part of a broader plan to ensure responsible use of resources during the current energy shortage.
In addition, the chief minister has imposed a ban on protocol vehicle convoys that typically accompany ministers and senior officials. Under the revised rules, only one escort vehicle will be allowed for ministers or high-ranking officers, and that too strictly for essential security purposes.
The provincial government has also shifted many departments toward a work-from-home model to further reduce petrol consumption. Officials said only essential staff will attend offices in person, while others will continue their duties remotely. The government clarified that administrative work will continue without interruption, but travel by support staff will be minimized to ease pressure on fuel supplies.
To ensure uninterrupted public services, the government confirmed that digital initiatives such as the “Maryam Ki Dastak” program and other e-business services will remain operational. Official meetings will also be conducted through online platforms and teleconferences.
The government has additionally banned official outdoor events and postponed the annual Horse and Cattle Show festival to reduce unnecessary activities that may increase petrol usage.
To strengthen oversight, District Petroleum Monitoring Committees are being formed across the province. Authorities will also monitor transport fares closely and take legal action against overcharging, while keeping a watch on the supply and demand of essential food items. The chief minister also urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and petrol hoarding during the crisis.
