Punjab Excise Increases Prices for Premium Vehicle Number Plates

The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has approved a major increase in the base prices of premium Number Plates across the province. The decision was taken to improve transparency and boost revenue through a more structured auction system.

According to officials, the base prices of 64 premium Number Plates have been raised significantly. Some of the most popular numbers, including 1, 3, 57, and 9, now carry a base price of Rs100,000. The widely sought-after number 786 has also seen a sharp increase. Its price has been raised from Rs10,000 to Rs100,000.

Authorities stated that double-digit Number Plates will now cost Rs50,000. Previously, these were available for around Rs7,000. Similarly, triple-digit numbers have increased to Rs25,000 from Rs5,000. The new pricing structure reflects the growing demand for unique and premium registration numbers.

Officials explained that the revised rates are part of a broader effort to ensure transparency in the sale process. The department plans to sell these numbers through online auctions. This system is expected to provide equal opportunities for buyers and prevent unfair practices.

In addition to the price hike, the department has also approved the re-auction of a large number of unsold plates. Reports indicate that around 46,600 Number Plates remain unclaimed. These include 10,400 car numbers, 33,300 motorcycle numbers, and 3,000 commercial vehicle numbers.

The Excise Department believes that re-auctioning these plates will help generate additional revenue. It will also allow more buyers to access premium numbers through a transparent process. Officials said the new rates will be implemented from this month.

So far, the government has collected more than Rs8 billion through e-auctions of vehicle numbers. The latest increase in prices is expected to further strengthen revenue collection. At the same time, it aims to regulate the market and meet the rising interest in premium Number Plates.

Experts say the move could impact buyers looking for unique vehicle identities. However, the department maintains that the policy will improve fairness and efficiency. The updated system is designed to balance demand with a clear and open bidding process.
